Walk along Kuta Street

The Kuta Beach walking street (Jalan Pantai Kuta) is one of Kuta’s main thoroughfares; a one-way street that follows on from where Legian’s primary nightlife and shopping street, Jalan Legian, ends. Jalan Pantai Kuta starts from the so-called ‘Bemo corner’ intersection, where you can find a multitude of small souvenir shops, spas and art kiosks. Although you’re most likely to start on the sands of Kuta Beach, we’re presenting this Kuta Beach Walking Street guide from this intersection for easier reference. All the best things to see and do along Kuta Beach Road are listed below.

Right on the corner is Kuta Kidz, a colourful boutique filled with children’s tropical resort wear. Further along the narrow footpath are rows of kiosks selling anything from authentic Balinese silver jewellery and vivid batiks, to fake Rolexes and Bulgari perfumes. Much of the items sold are similar from one kiosk to another, so it’s good to compare prices before you haggle to eventually score a good bargain. Among the popular dining spots that you’ll encounter immediately is the original Made’s Warung, established in 1969, it has filled the bellies of surfers and expats with somewhat westernized spicy Balinese cuisine ever since. Right beside it is Un’s Paradise Restaurant, which isn’t street-side, yet accessible down a small alley. Next door, is the communal hall and traditional town council of Kuta, called Banjar Pande Mas. Its ornate Balinese architecture gives the road a refreshingly traditional touch amid the modern, hectic, and traffic-dominated vibe usually felt in Kuta.

Along Kuta Beach Road you’ll find many global franchises and brand outlets like KFC, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, or if you wish to check out the Kuta Art Market at its end. Proceed on your Kuta Beach walking street journey, and you’ll find Jamie Oliver’s Bali franchise, Jamie’s Italian, right beside the Hard Rock Hotel. Take the turn right, and you see Hard Rock Café, and all the prominent diners attached to notable Kuta beach hotels, along the beach road. The grand Kuta Beachwalk complex is halfway, most likely serving as a conclusion to your walk. Jalan Pantai Kita ends at Jalan Melasti, which will take you to Legian again, full circle.

Before reaching Kuta Beach, your walk will cover an eclectic mix of tattoo shops, surf shops, convenience stores, made-to-order leather shops and tailors, spas, beauty salons, more souvenir and art kiosks, motorbike rentals, and money changers. You'll also find the dazzling Kuta Angel Hotel with its intricately carved walls and statues, juice bars and gelato parlours. In between, be ready to face beggars, persistent ‘tourism information’ people trying to sell you tours (or timeshare offers), or touts selling the same things you saw at the many arts and souvenir kiosks you just passed. Kuta Square shopping arcade is a nice stop before you hit the coastal section of Kuta Beach walking street.
